The more than 50-year-old Panchayati Seva Trust, a subordinate of the 125-year-old Marwadi Fatehpuriya Panchayati Wadi Trust, opened their redeveloped community building 'Satyanarayan Goenka Bhavan' on Sunday at JB Nagar in Andheri (East). The building was inaugurated by

Dr Subhash Chandra, Zee and Essel group chairman, in the presence of local MLA Parag Alavani.

The Bhavan was first built in 1980 with the maximum amounts of funds given by Satyanarayan Goenka. In 2011, his son, industrialist and philanthropist Ramesh Goenka, continued the tradition and gave Rs4 crore to get the decaying structure up and running.

The building now has two multipurpose halls and 27 rooms which will be run on no-profit basis, although charges will be levied for utility and maintenance expenses. The members of the trust said that the premises will be used for social, cultural and other events of community welfare, like medical camps.

Alavani said that he had participated in many events in the past at the earlier Bhavan and all of them were graded events. Alavani was thankful that a renowned place like this Bhavan has been opened again.

Dr Chandra said that when he first came to Mumbai, his first house was also in JB Nagar. He congratulated the trust members for this initiative. "The Marwadi community is known as a business community and my ancestors have also come from the same region as the trust members. The community has done a lot for the society and built many institutions. They have been instrumental in bringing the BJP government to power. When a few years ago I visited Laxmangad in Rajasthan, I felt that many towns there are still living in the past. Recently, during my visit to the Jaipur Literature Festival, I had a chance of speaking the Rajasthan chief minister about Narendra Modi's dream of building smart cities. I have made a promise on the community's behalf that the area, inclusive of 12 towns, will be made into a smart city. We have been promised that the amount we collect for the development will be matched by the Rajasthan government," said Dr Chandra who added that every person from the community should donate 10% of their income to charity.
