Last week, several professionals from various creative fields gathered at Whistling Woods International (WWI) at Filmcity, Goregaon, for the unveiling of YouTube Space Mumbai, a state-of-the-art collaboration and production facility, which will allow YouTube creators and students of WWI to learn about video production and other aspects of video creation, collaborate with other creators and learn to use the tools in order to realise their creative goals.

A grand opening
The launch event kick started with a performance from Aakash Gandhi, pianist and composer and founder of 88 Keys to Euphoria, and his collaborators Ash King and Shashaa Tirupati. Their latest collaborative video Billie Jean | Jiya Re (Mashup Cover), which was screened for the audience, ended with a resounding applause from everyone present in the auditorium. YouTube Space Mumbai is the latest to open after YouTube Spaces in prominent cities like Tokyo, Los Angeles, London, New York, São Paulo, Berlin and Paris. The 1,400 sq. ft. space allows creators to access, at no charge, all the latest audio-visual and editing equipment to produce original and innovative digital video content for their own YouTube channels; the pre-requisite being that a creator should have had uploaded some content on their channel.

Learn, connect and create
While the concept seems pretty straightforward, it is a huge leap not just for YouTube to make the most of the Indian YouTube creator community, but also for creative individuals to leverage the facilities, equipment, technical knowledge and support to create path-breaking content. Lance Podell, Director, Global Head of YouTube Spaces, said, “By working with WWI, we hope to empower India’s next generation of digital creators. We look forward to seeing what video content will emerge from the Space and the community it fosters.” Podell quoted the Hindi proverb ‘ek aur ek gyarah’ to emphasise that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and how working in collaboration and in a community is a win-win situation. YouTube Space Mumbai will also organise events, workshops and networking engagements, which are open to all YouTube creators. Podell mentioned conducting 45–50 courses ranging from comedy writing, horror makeup, audio development technique, lighting, how to work on a shoestring budget and more.
