The LT Marg police have arrested a 22-year old man for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs30 lakh from the office of his former employer in south Mumbai. A CCTV camera at the crime spot had captured suspect Hitesh Jain in the act which ultimately led to his arrest on April 12.

According to the police, Andheri (W) resident Shripal Parekh had approached them on December 10, 2013, saying his delivery boy had ran away with nearly 1 kg of gold from his office at Mani Bhuvan in Zaveri Bazaar.

Parekh, 35, told the police that Jain was working with him for the past three years. While Parekh kept one set of keys of the shop with him, Jain had been given the other set.

"Parekh wanted to deliver 990 grams of gold ornaments to a Panvel-based client and had packed them on December 7. Since the next day was a Sunday and his shop remained shut, Parekh had asked Jain to come early on Monday and deliver the jewelleries," said an officer from LT Marg police station.

The officer said Parekh downed shutters at 8.15 pm, his usual time, on December 7 and went home. He said, "On December 9, when Parekh reached his shop around 11am, he found it to be closed. He entered the shop with his set of keys and found the jewellery packet missing."

Despite repeated attempts, Parekh could not get in touch with Jain as he had switched off his mobile phone. "On checking with the Panvel client, Parekh learned that Jain never delivered the packet," said the officer.

Parekh then went through the CCTV footage at his workplace and was shocked to see that Jain had entered the shop on December 7 night, after he had closed the shutters. "Parekh was sure that Jain had stolen the ornaments. He handed over the footage to us," added the officer.
On receipt of specific information, a police team picked Jain from his native place in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and brought him to city. Jain has been booked under section 381 of the Indian Penal Code (for theft committed by a servant).
