A 19-year-old youth was arrested by Charkop police for allegedly extorting valuables worth over Rs1 lakh from his girlfriend after threatening to expose her photographs with him on social networking sites. Thus, the victim, also 19-year-old, started stealing gold jewellery and cash from her home. According to the police, accused Vaibhav Kamble and the girl are childhood friends. Both are school dropouts and they live in the Charkop area of Kandivli (West).

Anand Koli, senior PI of Charkop police station, said, "Kamble had photographers in which both of them are seen posing together. They are not objectionable or obscene. But he threatened that he will post it on social networking sites and show them to her father if she did not pay him money."

The victim conceded to his demands and over the past one month, started stealing jewellery and cash from her home. "She handed over cash and valuables worth over Rs1 lakh to Kamble. When she recently stole her mother's mangalsutra, her father started getting suspicious. When her father started grilling her, she narrated everything to him," added Koli.

The girl's father approached the police and registered a case on Sunday, following which Kamble was arrested on charges of extortion. He has been remanded in police custody till Thursday.
