In order to extend a helping hand for the family of late Vilas Shinde, a traffic constable who was killed by two brothers in Khar, the Worli Police Camp Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal will be donation Rs25,000 soon.

After the recent incident, the Worli Police Camp mandal decided to celebrate the festival in a low key. On Wednesday, in order to pay tribute to Shinde, crime branch constable Santosh Desai along with his team made 6X4 feet rangoli portrait of Shinde with rangoli powder and salt.

Speaking about the money collected to donate to Shinde's family and the celebration this year, Deepak Rane, president of the Ganeshotsav mandal, said: "We lost one member from our police family. This year, we had a low cost celebration unlike previous years. The money saved from cost cutting as well as contribution from a few members' pocket will be donated to Shinde's family once they are back in the city. Every year, we make posters regarding the laws and rules needs to be obeyed as a decoration but this year rather than printing posters we contributed that money to extend a helping hand to them."

Shinde was attacked with a wooden plank by a youth after he was asked for the vehicle documents at a petrol pump. He passed away at Lilavati Hospital on August 31.

Speaking about the incident and why they wanted to pay tribute to Shinde, Rane said: "Shinde was doing his duty. If people are against any law they should ask the government. Why a constable, who was just doing his duty, was attacked? During festivals we do 24 hours of duty. Our children stay in fear because people have a mindset that a police constable will always behave in a bad way. They should know that we are here for their safety and not to harm them."
