The routine of narrating stories at bedtime has been non-existent at city homes for quite sometime now. Being caught in demanding professional lives, many parents do not have time to pick out stories and books for their children, let alone read out to them. Due to several other factors and influences, reading has become a rarity among youngsters. In an attempt to change the mindset towards reading books and make children realise the pleasures of reading, a handful of parents in the city came together to start Book Reading Club three months ago.

After two interesting sessions of story narrations and discussions, the club will be conducting a free one-and-a-half hour session on September 7 at Landmark store at Inorbit mall, Vashi, for kids.

"Kids can look forward to being a part of activities like building words, weaving a story in proper sequences and reading out a book in an interesting way. The aim is to enhance their pronunciation skills, imagination and instill the importance of having sense and sequence while writing stories," said Seema Grewal, in-charge of activities.

Grewal, along with Kaval Katija, Prof. Smita Ghate, Dr Preeti Dave and several others, conceived the idea and subsequently started holding sessions. "The aim is to help children identify the right books to read according to their age and how to develop pace. This will be a good platform for youngsters to learn to enjoy reading," said Kaval Katija, a Vashi resident and mother of two.

As the organisers want to make children familiar to issues concerning them, the Sunday session will have Payal Shah Karwa, author of 'The Bad Touch' addressing students on the same. Smita Ghate, a professor at MGM Law College, Nerul will discuss with kids on how reading is a delightful activity by sharing her personal experiences. Poem recital and story-telling by kids will also be done.

"We have also requested parents of the participants to attend so that they can share their inputs on helping children take to reading and also learn from the activities," added Katija.
