Taking a shockingly bizarre stand, contract labourers across the city staged protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the civic headquarters on Monday with the body of contract labour who died on Saturday. The protest was aimed at demanding pension for the deceased.

Yusuf Shaikh (30), a contract labourer, met with an accident on January 8 when a garbage van turned turtle. He received grievous injuries and was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi. Unfortunately, Shaikh succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. Shaikh is survived by his wife and three children.

Shaikh was working for BMC'S conservancy department on contract. Following his death, his colleagues took the issue to their union demanding Shaikh's dues and pension as per the policy announced by BMC in 2009.

Milind Ranade, president of Kachra Vahatuk Shramik Sangh, said that as per the policy, even the contract workers working for the conservancy department are entitled to the benefits which neither the contractor nor the BMC was ready to acknowledge. "We have been raising this demand time and again, but it seems to be falling on deaf ears. If Shaikh's family does not get their dues we will come again," said Ranade.

The union had demanded Shaikh's dues, pension for his wife and assurance of permanent job for the son when of the deceased when he turns 18 years of age. Presently, Shaikh's son is 15 years of age.

Pallavi Darade, additional municipal commissioner, has assured the union that Shaikh's family will get the dues. "The AMC has also given assurance of a job for Shaikh's son. BMC should ensure that the policy is implemented, so that there is no ambiguity," said Ranade.
