The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to begin construction work on the north-bound arm of the Kherwadi junction flyover next week. Part of the junction has been barricaded on the Western Express Highway.
As per the plans disclosed by the MMRDA authorities, alternate arrangements have been made to avoid bumper-to-bumper traffic, wherein waiting time is anywhere above half an hour.
"The service road starting from Bandra court to the Government Polytechnic College (towards Vakola) will be used only for north-bound vehicles," said a development authority official. The traffic police has issued an order banning parking on the service road.
Similarly, one lane of the south-bound Kherwadi junction flyover will be used by light motor vehicles to travel towards north Mumbai, that is from Prabodhankar Thakre flyover at Kalanagar Junction towards Andheri.
An MMRDA official said, "We plan to begin construction within another 5 to 6 days." Earlier, the authorities had said that the work will begin in the first week of October, but due to the assembly elections, the work was put on hold for a fortnight.
The north-bound arm of this bridge is scheduled to be ready by May 2015, on the same lines as last year's schedule. The construction of the south-bound arm (585 metres) had begun on November 1, 2013 and was inaugurated on June 16 this year, a record duration of seven and a half months instead of the usual permitted 18 months.
Once the bridge is ready, motorists will get a signal-free commute on either directions between Dahisar Check Naka to Worli Sea Face.
During peak hours, over 7,000 vehicles cross the Kherwadi-Kalanagar junction per hour, thereby making it one of the busiest traffic junctions of Mumbai.
