A murder that appeared to be the outcome of a monetary dispute turned out to be the result of an illicit affair between the wife of the deceased and her neighbour.

The JJ Marg police on Friday arrested the woman for allegedly hatching a plot to kill her husband who was a “hurdle” in her illicit relationship.

On May 20, the police had received information that a man was lying in a pool of blood at an isolated place behind Buddh Vihar in Byculla. The police reached the spot and took the person to JJ hospital where he was declared dead. The person’s injuries showed that he had been stabbed more than 10 times.

The police had registered a case of murder against an unknown person and begun investigations. “Later, the deceased was identified as Churchgate resident Pascal Matthew Nayak. Originally from Odisha, Nayak used to do small jobs for his livelihood and stayed with his wife and children,” said an officer from the JJ Marg police station.

He added that a few days before his death Nayak had put one Manoj Kumar alias Manjya Lalit Mohandas on job at a vada pav centre and since then had been hounding Kumar for money for the favour. The police had initially suspected that this repeated demand for money could have driven Kumar to eliminate Nayak.

Based on that suspicion, the police took Kumar into custody. Kumar then dropped the name of Nayak’s neighbour Sushant alias Bharat alias Prem Korad during the interrogation.

“Kumar and Nayak’s neighbour told us that they murdered him on the instructions of his 30-year-old wife Saibati,” the officer said.

Explaining the sequence of events leading to the murder, the officer said, “Sushant and Saibati were having an affair and Nayak was a hurdle in their relationship. Hence, Saibati hatched a plan to bump off her husband. She took photographs of a secluded spot and showed it to Sushant. She also went with one of her children and Sushant to do a recce of the spot and finalise it.”

On May 19, Saibati allegedly offered alcohol to Nayak and, later, sent him with Sushant and Kumar. The two allegedly took Nayak to the spot and killed him. After the crime, Saibati left for her native place in Odisha with her children. A police team then went to Odisha, nabbed her and brought her back to Mumbai.

“Saibati is in police custody till June 15,” the officer said. The trio have been booked for murder, conspiracy to commit murder and destroying evidence under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
