A middle-aged woman suffered burns when a fire erupted in the car she was driving at Malad on Saturday morning.

The woman, Rashmi Vyas, 35, is being treated for 20% burns at a private hospital and her condition is said to be stable.

The incident happened at about 11.30am, while Vyas was on her way from her house at Raheja Complex to her son’s school for a parents’ meeting.

Vyas had reached the T-junction on the Madh-Marve road when a fire erupted in the Tata Indica vehicle. She managed to steer the car to the side of the road where passersby broke the window and got her out.

The Malwani police said the woman was taken to a local hospital where she was given first aid.

“She suffered burns on the hands and the temple area,” a police official said. She was subsequently shifted to a private hospital.  The police suggested that the fire may have been caused by a short-circuit.
