In a shocking case at Cuffe Parade on Sunday afternoon, two brothers aged 13 and seven years were mowed down by a speeding car driven by an army officer’s wife. She was learning driving, and the officer was seated beside her, giving her tips. The driver did not have a licence.

The couple has been arrested by the police for rash and negligent driving and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The husband was arrested as he allowed his wife to drive the car despite knowing that she did not have a valid driving licence.

The deceased have been identified as Akshansh Dhyani, 13, and Abhay Dhyani, 7, while those arrested have been identified as Sangeeta Rai, 34, and her husband Santoshkumar, 36. They are all residents of Suvidha Complex building in the NML area of Navy Nagar, Colaba.

According to the police, around 2.15 pm on Sunday, Santoshkumar, who did not have a valid licence to train, was teaching his wife to drive the Hyundai Santro car (DL-01-C-8548), posing a threat to the life of others. Sangeeta was driving on a public road near the NML area.

“While driving the car, Sangeeta went on to hit the two children. They were arrested after another army man, Ravindra Jadhav, lodged a complaint against the couple. They were produced before a local court on Monday and were remanded in judicial custody,” said an officer from Cuffe Parade police station.

The police have seized the car, and are verifying its documents. “The vehicle is registered with Delhi Regional Transport Office. Efforts are on to trace the owner of the vehicle. It is important to get the registered documents of the vehicle and efforts are on to get them,” the officer said.

The couple has been booked under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 279 (rash driving) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
