The Vakola police have recently arrested a 27-year-old woman who had allegedly taken Rs24 lakh from a Mahim resident as the selling price of her flat two years ago. The accused, Maria D’Souza, has neither given complainant Browne Cardoz, 48, the flat  nor has she returned his money.

In his complaint, Cardoz has alleged that D’Souza, a resident of Kalina, Santa Cruz, wanted to sell her Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) flat in 2011. They had reached a Rs28-lakh deal for the flat. Cardoz gave her Rs24 lakh in March, 2011 when she promised to give him the paper and the keys to the flat.

“But after two months when Cardoz asked her for the keys, D’Souza gave him excuses. Later, she even stopped answering his phone calls. After a few months, when Cardoz failed to get possession of the flat, he asked her to return his money,” said senior police inspector Vinayak Mule of Vakola police station.  “D’Souza, who is a call centre employee, told him that she had purchased a room in a slum at Kalina with Rs12 lakh, but since it was illegal the civic body demolished it. She also told him that she had given the rest of the money to her family members and would give it back to him as soon as she got it back” said another officer.

But when she failed to return his money, Cardoz lodged a complaint against her. “We investigated the case and found that the said flat is registered in her father’s name and the SRA building has not even been completed,” said Mule.

“She was produced in the court on Tuesday. The court remanded her in police custody till November 29,” the officer added.
