An alert woman bank manager on Thursday nabbed a conman who was using a skimming device to capture the PIN number and other details of ATM card holders using an ATM centre in Mulund. The fraudster was later handed over to Kurla government railway police.
The incident came to light at around 5.30pm. Cezee Vincent, 35, a resident of Airoli and an assistant manager with the Kurla branch of Shamrao Vittal Cooperative Bank, visited an Axis Bank ATM centre on platform one at Mulund railway station to withdraw cash.
When she was about to insert her ATM card into the card slot, an unidentified person entered the ATM centre and stopped her. He requested her to insert the card into a device (which turned out to be a skimmer) attached to the machine as the ATM machine was not functioning. Suspecting foul play, she got out of the ATM without using her card. A few minutes later, she noticed another man entering the ATM centre to withdraw money. She observed the man who had spoken to her earlier tell the man in the ATM the same story.
After the man withdrew money and left, a curious Vincent entered the centre again and pulled out the skimmer which was affixed to the ATM machine. She then caught the conman and handed him over to the GRP personnel at the station.
“The conman was identified as Kishore Chhaganbai Naiyya, 27, a resident of Bhavnagar in Gujarat. He was booked for cheating and under sections of the Information Technology Act,” said Pramod Babar, police inspector of Kurla GRP station. During preliminary investigation, Naiyya revealed that he was involved in the racket since the past couple of months and had committed similar offences in Bhavnagar too. Inspector Babar added that Naiyya was remanded in police custody till October 9.
