The woman was arrested almost a month ago on the grounds that she cheated people by issuing fraud cheque amounting to Rs 8.64 lakh for the fish that she had purchased.
A 40-year-old woman, Kalpana Nipaj alias Arpita alias Sangita, who was arrested by the Bandra Police for allegedly committing a fraud worth Rs 8.64 lakh, was granted bail by the Sessions Court on Saturday.
The woman was arrested almost a month ago on the grounds that she cheated people by issuing fraud cheque amounting to Rs 8.64 lakh for the fish that she had purchased. Nipaj had approached the court seeking bail.
Assistant public prosecutor, Sanjana Sharma, said, "The matter was up for bail, which we had opposed. According to the investigating agency, the accused was a habitual offender. Nipaj was in the business of supplying fish to various hotels in Mumbai. She used to purchase fish worth lakhs of rupees directly from the traders and used to supply it to hoteliers. However, she failed to pay back the cost of the same. Rather, it was when she issued a fraud cheque to the traders that they approached the police to register a complaint."
The investigating officer, while opposing the bail application, said, "The accused is a habitual offender and if released on bail, there is a likelihood of the accused tampering with the evidence as well as absconding."
Nipaj in her application claimed that she is wrongly arrested in the matter and that she was lodged in jail since last month. The court held, "Looking at the nature of transactions, it will be just and proper to grant a conditional bail to the accused." The matter will up for taken up for trial.
