More than 14 lakh students have appeared for their first Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) English language board examination paper on Wednesday, from Maharashtra, and 3.30 lakh from Mumbai city. The examination went smoothly across the city and the state, except for those students who reached late to their examination centre, despite the Board making it clear that students will not be allowed to enter the examination centre after 11am from this year.

In order to curb paper leak cases, which was happening continuously from the past three years during HSC board examination, this year onwards the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) decided not to allow any student once the examination begins. Earlier, students were allowed to enter the exam hall till 11.30am.

Despite that, many students reached late, citing different reasons.

Subhash Borse, secretary, Mumbai Division Board, said: “For Wednesday’s examination, six students reached the exam centre before 11.20am and nine after 11.20am. Hence, the six were allowed, only because they were found to have genuine reasons for being late. Nine others were not allowed. This does not mean that hereafter students can reach examination halls after 11am. The Board will stick to its rule and can restrain students from giving an exam if they come in late.”

The Board has appealed to students to leave from home with sufficient time in hand, for their board examination in order to reach before time. On Wednesday, a private candidate from Nalasopara came to fill the exam form, who was immediately helped with the hall ticket by the Board and allowed to sit for HSC Board exam from Navi Mumbai area. Similarly, on Tuesday, 24 private candidates came to fill their exam forms who were issued hall tickets by the Mumbai division board.
