Early morning at Dadar’s vegetable market, a vendor was seen shouting at his customers, “I am sitting here early morning to sell vegetables which I brought from Solapur and not to collect Rs 500 notes.”

Like every day, the Dadar market outside the station was crowded on Wednesday morning as vegetable vendors reached the spot to shop at the wholesale price. But at every wholesaler’s spot, there were discussions between the regular vendors and wholesalers about the Rs 100 change in their pocket.

While some vendors, who travelled from different areas of the city to buy fresh vegetables, brought Rs 100 change, a few opted to buy less vegetables in order to save the Rs 100 notes they have.

“Usually I come here and buy vegetables worth Rs 4,000 a day but today I brought vegetables worth Rs 1,500. Yesterday night, it was difficult to stand in lines outside ATMs. I managed to take out some amount for my business. Even if the common people have to suffer a little, it is a good step to bring out the black money,” said Rajesh Singh, a vegetable vendor based in Santacruz who visited Dadar to buy vegetables at the wholesale rate.

Wholesalers are unhappy to see Rs 500 currency notes customers are offering. Sadnik Sayed, 55, said: “I am here to do business and sell out the vegetables I brought from Solapur. I am not accepting Rs 500 currency offered by any customer. I have to look after my business. Why will I accept the banned currency and later stand in a queue to exchange banned currency in the bank for?”
