In last 65 years of its operations, this is the first time that the Mumbai local train system has witnessed a stampede.
Elphinstone railway station, one of Mumbai's busiest train stations, turned the deadliest on Friday morning when 27 people lost their lives in rush hour stampede.
This is the first time in the history of Mumbai local trains that so many people have died on a railway station.
Last time, the railway tracks witnessed so many dead bodies was in 2006 Mumbai blasts.
As Mumbai goes back to its usual rhythm, here are 10 facts about the Elphinstone stampede:
1: The Western Railways has blamed incessant rains for the stampede. “Rains were unprecedented and people were caught unawares,” the official statement said.
2: “Prima facie, rumours like falling of FOB led people to panic,leading to tremendous push from behind towards exit leading to stampede,” the Western Railways said.
3: The stampede took place on the foot over bridge at the Elphinstone station around 10:30 am in the morning rush hours.
4: Locals living in the area say that the Friday's incident was waiting to happen. "Ever since new office buildings have come up in the area, the crowd has increased many times, but nothing has been done to improve the infrastructure at the station. Who is responsible for these deaths," asked Arun Tiwari, regional head of a marketing company, who lives nearby.
5: But it was these very people who came to the commuters' rescue much before the police or medical aid arrived.
6: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis, who is currently in Singapore on a two-day visit, took to Twitter to express his shock and sorrow. He also announced relief of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the stampede victims.
7: The massive suburban local train network, often called as Mumbai's lifeline, ferries 8 million people daily, an IndiaSpend report said.
8: Though the Friday's incident is deadliest in terms of casualties, the report also said that 9 people die every day on these tracks
9: The peak rush hour in morning is 8:30 am to 9:30 am when over 6 lakh people commute in the trains.
10: According to The Hindu report, minutes after the accident, the Government Railway Polcie and Mumbai Police personnel were seen arguing over the jurisdiction of the stampede.
