The stations between Churchgate to Mumbai Central are heavily used every day by lakhs of commuters. The multi-disciplinary audit team that surveyed stations on the Western Railway (WR) have found 49 shortcomings at these stations, which have been creating problems for a safe commute. These teams were formed after the Elphinstone Road stampede that occurred on September 29, in which 23 people died.

CHURCHGATE

They inspected all four platforms – which are like island platforms that provide access on both sides of a train. The report has asked for relocation of the GRP desk, Suvidha benches between platforms 2-3 on the concourse and to minimise its size so that it doesn't infringe passengers. The open drain besides the wall in the subway needs to be covered while three departmental stalls from the mini concourse have to be shifted to ease out congestion. The redundant weighing scale and huge ladders on platform 4 should be removed.

MARINE LINES

The catering stall on platform 1 near station master office exit needs to be shifted on the same platform towards north end. The WR has dumped materials of old fencings and metal pieces at platforms which is also a matter of concern as the width of the platform is less. Leakage from cooler water huts at platform 4 has to be attended to apart from the issue of hawkers and encroachments on the south foot-overbridge (FOB). They want the BMC to declare the entire stretch alongside the pathway of the flyover as a 'No Hawking Zone.'

MUMBAI CENTRAL

This is the headquarters of the Mumbai division of WR. The audit team has found unauthorised parking near the approach road on the east side that needs to be restricted. The matter for widening the approach road towards Tardeo for access to fire tenders, ambulance and other emergency vehicles needs to be taken up.

Levelling of surface and provision of fencing throughout the stretch near the power room towards the north side is required. Water leakage near the Divyang toilet located behind the station master's office on platform 1 needs to be attended. Also, there is no signage for Divyang toilet on platforms 1-2.

CHARNI ROAD

The surface of platform near station master office on platform one needs to be repaired and construction material needs to be removed. Storage found below the FOBs and advertisement structures near booking office at the middle entrance on the west side need to be removed.

The ATVMs need to be relocated close to the walls; the south landing of the middle FOB on platform four needs to be provided with ATVMs. The granite bench near entry/exit and catering units from platforms 2-3 are infringing the smooth flow of passenger movement.

GRANT ROAD

There is an old abandoned PCO booth, and food stalls erected near platform 4 south east FOB landing, which need to be removed. The area needs to be converted into a 'No Hawking' zone by the BMC. The south end FOB landing on platforms 2-3 needs fencing at the curb to prevent trespassing.

The entrance of the west middle booking office has cubicles on 6 pillars of the podium, measuring approximately 4 feet which is used by beggars and anti-social elements. This area can be allotted to stalls on the platform.
