Sanskrit is considered to be the mother of Indian languages and holds the same place of pride as Latin, Greek and other European languages. And on Saturday, students of Thane's Joshi Bedekar college got an opportunity to learn about the basics and nuances of the age-old Indian language from US's Professor Emeritus George Cardona.

Cardona, a known linguist and indologist from the University of Pennsylvania, was in Thane on February 6. "He is here to conduct a Sanskrit workshop in Pune, which is being relayed through video-conferencing to 7-8 centres in the world, Bedekar college is one of these centres," said professor Narayan Barse.

In his interaction with the students, Cardona spoke about ancient Sanskrit scholar Panini's Karak theory in grammar. "Globally, Panini is considered an authority on Karak theory. Cardona made this complex theory so simple for the students. It was a pleasure to learn this from him," Barse added.

Panini was a Sanskrit grammarian from ancient India, who is known for his 3,959 rules of Sanskrit morphology, syntax and semantics.

Cardona also spoke about the demand for Sanskrit globally, why it is important to learn the language, and other related topics. He said that because all sacred books in India are in Sanskrit, it is important to learn it. Sanskrit is a treasure trove of our culture and we should preserve it, Cardona said.

He also gave examples about the difference in English and Marathi languages. For instance, in English, a pot can be any utensil, but in Marathi, every kind of pot has a particular name. "Cardona speaks Sanskrit like a pandit. If a person like him is teaching Sanskrit, then everybody would like to learn from him," said Barse.
