Waterlogging along tracks: BMC places blame squarely on railways

In order to provide immediate shelter to affected persons during monsoon, the disaster management of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has kept ready a total 144 emergency assembly points across all 24 wards. Affected persons can take immediate shelter at these assembly points if there is a landslide, building collapse or in similar eventualities take placed during rains.

As per the BMC’s disaster management, around 21 wards become vulnerable of water logging while 19 wards are at high risk of landslide. “If there is a landslide, residents have to be moved to a safer place where they can be accommodated. We had already identified schools and similar places to shift residents during emergency,” said an official from the disaster control of BMC.

As per the list prepared by the BMC’s disaster management department, there are 74 vulnerable settlements, 287 landside spots and 203 water logging spots.

K (east) ward has maximum number of emergency 19 assembly points of the total 144 points identified by BMC. This is followed by L ward with 14 points. K (east) has around C1 category 33 private dilapidated buildings and 5 each water logging and landslide spots. However, the L ward is the most vulnerable as there 111 dilapidated buildings of C1 category, 14 water logging spots, 15 landslide spots and 13 vulnerable settlements.

According to official, after landslide or similar incident, there is chaotic situation and affected persons do not have an idea where to take shelter. “We have kept ready schools and similar places nearby of landslide and flooding spots that will be used during such calamity,” said the official. The premises will also be equipped with couple of basic facilities.

In addition, the disaster management of BMC has also put up banner or board across all such landslide-prone or flooding areas. These boards have information like do's and don't, contact number of disaster management, local civic officials, police, fire brigade and school or similar place address where they can take shelter. “We have educated people what to do in such situation,” said the official, adding, “People stand on debris of landslid or collapsed building to take photograph which is dangerous for both who are standing and who is under the debris,” said the official
