Azad Maidan police on Tuesday recorded the statements of eyewitnesses and family members of the three persons who were attacked by a 42-year-old HIV positive patient in Bombay Hospital on Monday. Police said that they have so far recorded statements of around five persons in the case.

The accused, a resident of Agripada, was admitted to the hospital on May 8 and was in its general ward located on the third floor.

A senior police officer said that the accused's wife used to stay with him in the hospital. However, on Monday morning, his brother-in-law was with him in the hospital.

As per the statement of eyewitnesses, the accused went to the toilet on Monday morning and got into an argument with his brother-in-law over some issue. The accused then kicked his brother-in-law and also a sweeper lady who was working nearby. Soon after, a few ward boys rushed towards the accused, overpowered him and put him in his bed.

"The accused tried to bite one of the boys. This scared the boys off him as they thought that the virus might infect them. Had they shown a little more presence of mind, the incident could have been averted," the police officer added.

Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police (south region), said, "I have spoken to all those who were present in the ward and there are no discrepancies or contradictions in their accounts. We have asked for the accused's medical history. His statement has not been recorded so far as he is not in the right frame of mind."

A police officer from Azad Maidan police station said that a nurse had spotted him banging his head on the wall on Sunday afternoon and murmuring to himself that there was no point in living anymore. The wife of the accused had gone to the washroom and she was informed about this late by the nurse. However, none of them had informed the doctors about the condition of the accused.
