The duct line wall of British era collapsed at Shankar Tekdi, Mulund colony on Saturday due to continuous rains from last few days. One person died and 16 others got injured from the shanties that were adjacent to the wall.

Around midnight, the residents of Mulund colony woke up due to a terrific thud. "There was a thunderstorm and later, heard a clack as if something collapsed," says Maruti Kadam, NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) leader from ward number 98.

The colonial time wall had collapsed on four shanties which were adjacent to it. The wall was approximately 20 feet long and 12 feet tall wall that collapsed. While Prashant Santosh Jadhav (17), a resident of one of the shanties died on the spot, 15 others were caught under the debris.

"Before the fire brigade could reach at the spot, the local residents removed some of the injured from the debris," he says.

The injured were taken to the BMC's (Brihanmumbai municipal corporation) M T Agarwal hospital in Mulund west. While four are still admitted and undergoing the treatment, others got discharged.

Since it is a hilly area, BMC gave regular notices to residents to vacate the area but nobody paid any heed to it.

"After the police formalities are done we will demand compensation for the victims of the incident," says Kadam. When we contacted Mulund police station an official said that they have registered a case of accidental death as one person died in this incident.
