A few engineering students of Fr C Rodrigues College of Engineering were not permitted to sit for the seventh semester viva and practicals. According to these students, the college is not ready to accept the Bombay high court ruling of Oct 27 which said engineering students who had failed in more than five subjects in BE third year as well as earlier semesters should be allowed to appear for the seventh semester viva and practicals which began on Oct 27 in Mumbai University (MU).

What about other colleges?
After the HC interim ruling, most the city engineering colleges allowed such students to appear for viva and practicals. But Fr C Rodrigues College of Engineering in Vashi failed to do so.

Who had approached HC?
It was a student, Krutika Sakhare, who had moved the court against the MU ordinance of 2013, which makes it mandatory for engineering students to appear for their fourth year exams as per the new syllabus.

What did controller of exam say?
Ram Sharma (name changed), one of the affected engineering student, said: "Our college did not allow us to appear for viva and practicals. We told the principal that there was a HC interim ruling asking colleges to allow such students to appear for the seventh semester viva and practicals. We also approached the controller of examination, who said we should produce a copy of the HC ruling and the MU circular."

What was the principal's stand?
Neeta Naik (name changed), another student, said: "We even told the principal that in addition to the HC ruling, MU had put out a circular asking colleges to allow students to sit for viva and practicals. But he did not allow us to do that, saying we were not eligible to appear."
Attempts to contact the principal of Fr C Rodrigues College of Engineering, Rollin Fernandes, did not succeed.

It's not right: Bhonde
Controller of examination Dinesh Bhonde, Mumbai University, said: "One of the students approached me with this complaint. It's not right on the college's part to not allow these students to appear for viva and practicals. Colleges should adhere to the HC ruling."
