Days after dna published a report how Mumbai University officials were trying to cover up the B.Sc (IT) question paper scam exposed by this newspaper on November 22 by not making public the findings of the report of the expert committee, the University opened the "secret" report last week after allowing it to gather dust at the table of Controller of Exam.

Though Controller of Exam, Dinesh Bonde refused to share the findings of the report citing confidentiality and breach of protocol, he admitted that an urgent meet of Board of Examination has been called on December 5 to take a call on the issue. "The Board of Examination meet has been called December 5 which will examine the report submitted by the subject expert committee. The board will take a call on the matter."

Bonde refused to comment whether the committee indicted the paper setter for copy-paste job which amounts to fraud and corruption as it had given benefit to candidates from Usha Pravin Gandhi Management Institute, Vile Parle and may be more colleges.

A top official of the University however confirmed that the dna report was correct and it might lead to the re-examination of software testing paper for Semester 5 students. "This is a major embarrassment for all is us. A decision on re-exam may also be taken by the BoE."

The official said, "The paper setting procedure is supposed to be very confidential and foolproof. To ensure that we select experienced professors whose integrity is unquestionable. However, it seems one of the paper setters of BSc (IT) University simply copy-pasted the internal exam paper of that college which is a serious offence."

Varsity sources say, "The offence, which may lead to a re-exam and would cost mental agony to 16,000 students and huge monetary burden and loss of credibility to the Mumbai University, is still not a criminal one. "The professor may at the most might be debarred from the exam for future if found guilty," said an official.

It was dna which after receiving a tip off and the two question papers from the students had alerted University about the fraud on November 20 following which MU formed a committee to investigate the matter. Close to 16,000 students had appeared for the fifth semester of BSc (IT) exam who may have to write the paper all over again should University decides so.
