Nearly eight years after the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked universities to digitise the whole process of PhD studies, the University of Mumbai has finally woken up from slumber.

In a recent circular, the varsity has asked all university departments to send details of the eligible guides and research centres after which a list of the same would be uploaded on its official website.

The varsity has also asked departments to furnish information about the research work done by the faculty members.

In 2009, the UGC in its Minimum Standard Guidelines for Awardance of PhD had asked all the universities to maintain a database of all the theses of its doctoral students. The guidelines also prescribed that the universities should later upload the theses on Shodhganga a government portal hosting academic research.

Despite these guidelines, the University of Mumbai which awards over 300 research degrees every year was yet to follow any of the norms with respect to digitisation.
