A project entailing linking citizen-centric services to a 15-digit unique identification number for each house under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction will be completed by April end.

"We have been issuing a 15-digit unique identification number to each house in the city, and we expect the work to be completed by the month end. After completion of issuing unique number, services like paying property tax or water bill can be done by using this number at the Citizen Facilitation Centre," said the official.
In a bid to mitigate the chance of confusion between buildings names, the BMC had started identifying each building in the city with a unique number last year. According to a civic official, there are several buildings in wards that have the same name, often leading to confusion.
As per the plan, every building under the BMC's jurisdiction will carry a unique number. The official said that number will be derived from the 15-digit Section Account Code from the Property Tax receipt of a particular building. The code is unique to each building and cannot be repeated.
"After this system comes into effect, residents need not provide different consumer numbers to pay property tax or register a complaint. They can do all this by providing this unique number," said the official, adding that even the BMC can avail details of any property through this unique number.
