Uniform electricity tariff in city may be a reality soon with power distribution companies positive about it for consumers using less than 100 units.

In Mumbai, there are four power distribution companies having different tariffs for all slabs, including those between 0 and 100 units. For example, Tata Power charges Rs2.05 per unit for changeover residential customers, whereas Reliance Energy levies Rs4.79 per unit for the same bracket.

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking, on the other hand, has a per unit charge of Rs4.12 as against Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited levying Rs3.76 per unit for the residential slab of 0-100 units.

"There should be uniform tariffs in Mumbai for those consuming less than 100 units. However, beyond 100 units uniform tariff isn't workable," said Ashok Sethi, chief operating officer and executive director of Tata Power. There are other overhead costs and variables, such as different rates for power purchase, making it difficult to implement uniform power tariffs for those utilising over 100 units.

The BEST too is positive about the state government's recent plan for having similar pricing by all power distribution companies. "Except Reliance Energy, everyone else is providing power at a lesser rate," said Dr Jagdish Patil, general manager of BEST.

Reliance Energy spokesperson did not respond to dna's question on report shared with the state government on uniform tariff.

The state has also been keen on having uniform tariff for those up to 300 units, but sources shared that that may not happen as the power distribution companies would want to cross-subsidise the low-end consumers by passing the cost on to the higher slabs.
