After terminating its contract with Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium Mumbai Metro Transport Private Limited (MMTPL) to have an elevated corridor between Dahisar and Mankhurd, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is all set to table its plan for an underground Dahisar-Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro today.

"The line will be implemented on engineering, procurement and construction or cash contract basis, and not public private partnership financial model," said Sanjay Sethi, additional metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA and managing director of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).

The 40.2-km underground route is estimated to cost Rs28,900 crore and MMRDA will take the help of international financial agencies. The infrastructure body plans to avail loans to fund about 50 per cent to 60 per cent of the project cost.

Sources indicated that World Bank has shown to finance the corridor, which will pass under the Bandra Kurla Complex. The Union government is expected to take a decision on the same in the coming months.

Under the current plans, there will be 37 stations along the alignment to bridge the East-West connectivity for commuters. As Mumbai's development kept stretching towards north, even the public transport, suburban locals, focussed on North-South connectivity, thereby leaving a vacuum for East-West link for mass rapid transport.

Opening of the 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro has proved to be a boon and drastically cut down overall commuting time. Even the roads along the corridor are seeing reduction in traffic.

In 2003, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was appointed by MMRDA to prepare Mumbai Metro Master Plan, as per the plan approved by Authority on May 28, 2004 there were to be Colaba-Bandra-Charkop and Bandra-Kurla-Mankhurd alignments. But revision was done in a couple of years to make it into Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd elevated route.

Contract on the 31.87-km long elevated Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd was cancelled on November 10, after four years of stalemate between the MMRDA and Reliance Infrastructure. Now, the latest is to implement underground line between Dahisar and Mankhurd via Charkop-Bandra.
