Furious at being spurned by his ex-girlfriend, a 22-year-old youth stabbed her and then tried to kill himself on Thursday afternoon. The incident happened around 4.30pm near the girl's residence in Madh. Both the victim and the accused were taken to the nearby hospital.

According to the Malvani police, the 20-year-old girl, was returning home from college with the accused, Brian Fernandes, with whom she had been in a relationship for three years. A few months ago she had told him that she wanted to end the relationship.

"The two knew each other since long. However, due to some personal reasons, the victim had ended it and Fernandes was heartbroken," said an officer.

Unable to deal with the break-up, Fernandes confronted the victim near her house in Samra estate, Madh, and attacked her with a knife. "He stabbed her twice on the neck and hand, and then stabbed himself on the neck too and ran towards the beach," said another officer.

"Passers-by saw the girl lying in a pool of blood and took her to the nearest hospital. Later, the police was informed."

Fernandes too was admitted in the same hospital. "He is critical, while the victim is out of danger. We have registered a case of attempt to murder against Fernandes, he will be arrested once he is out of hospital," said the officer.
