UGC announces list of 21 fake universities, including 1 in Maharashtra

The fake universities are located in the states of Bihar, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday announced that 21 universities in multiple states were fake. The UGC has warned students not to take admission to such institutions as their degrees are not recognised. The UGC issues a list of such fake universities every year to alert students.

The fake universities are located in the states of Bihar, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

According to the UGC announcement, Delhi has six fake universities- namely, Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Varanasi, UP/Jagatpuri, Delhi; Commercial University Ltd, Daryagang; United Nations University, Delhi; Vocational University, Delhi; ADR-Centric Juridical University, ADR House, 8J, Gopala Tower, 25 Rajendra Place; and the Indian Institute of Science and Engineering.

Uttar Pradesh has eight fake universities- Mahila Gram Vidyapith/Vishwavidyalaya, (Women's University) Prayag, Allahabad; Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, Prayag, Allahabad; National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy, Kanpur; Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University), Achaltal, Aligarh; Uttar Pradesh Vishwavidyalaya, Kosi Kalan, Mathura; Maharana Partap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya, Pratapgarh; Indraprastha Shiksha Parishad, Institutional Area, Khoda, Makanpur, Noida Phase- II; and Gurukul Vishwavidyalaya, Vrindavan, Mathura.

The UGC announcement mentioned only one fake university from Maharashtra, namely the Raja Arabic University, Nagpur.

Section 22(1) of to the UGC Act, 1956, provides that only a University established by a central, state or provincial Act, or an institution deemed to be a university under section 3, is allowed to call itself a university.

In the notice UGC has informed the students that the 21 self-styled, unrecognised institutions functioning in contravention of the UGC Act have been declared fake and are not entitled to confer any degree. The list was issued by Prof Jaspal Sandhu, Secretary, UGC.
