Two persons were arrested on Monday for allegedly firing two rounds in the air for intimidating other people they were fighting with. Five other persons have been arrested in the same case on the charges of rioting.

Vasudev Patil, 33, a resident of sector 13 in Kharghar, was fighting with his cousins over the occupancy of a small lane at Kharghar village. While Vasudev claimed that he was the owner of that piece of land in the lane, the other party asserted that it belonged to them.

In that ruckus, Vasudev’s elder brother, Laxman, 36, came out of his residence with a licensed pistol and fired two rounds. Others present got scared and fled within minutes.

“We reached the spot within a few minutes and detained people from both the parties for their involvement in the fight. After investigation when we learnt about the firing incident, we arrested Vasudev and Laxman from the spot. We also arrested five others from the other party for rioting,” said SP Shewale, assistant police inspector from Kharghar police station.

The other arrested men have been identified as Namdeo Patil, Goraknath Patil, Bhupesh Patil, Gakul Patil and Santosh Patil.

Vasudev and Laxman have been booked under sections 336, 506B of the Indian Penal Code, sections 3, 25 and 27 of the Arms Act and section 135 of the Bombay Police Act. The police have also confiscated Laxman’s pistol late on Monday night. All the accused were produced before the judicial court on Tuesday afternoon.

“Laxman was just trying to scare people by firing in the air. He did not have any intention of killing anyone. He wanted to the people to end their fight as it was troubling and annoying residents of that area. We have not found any criminal record of the accused as far,” Shewale said.
