After the Bombay High Court set aside Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s decision to sanction his prosecution by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), former chief minister and state Congress chief Ashok Chavan charged that the BJP government was pursuing vendetta politics.

“The Bombay High Court has decided to set aside and squash the decision of the present Governor to sanction prosecution (by the CBI) in the Adarsh Housing Society case,” said Chavan, who is also a Lok Sabha MP from Nanded, on Friday. He added that the decision had shown that “truth will prevail in this country” and “no malafide intentions of any political party are accepted here by the judiciary.”

Chavan alleged that the decision of the BJP-led government to recommend his prosecution smacked of “political vendetta”. “This was done with an intention of revenge, to finish off political adversaries,” he charged. Chavan had to resign as the chief minister of Maharashtra in November 2010 after allegations of his involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society controversy emerged and was replaced by Prithviraj Chavan.

Ashok Chavan’s relatives had been allotted flats in the building located in Colaba. He had challenged Rao’s February 2016 decision to allow his prosecution under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

“The decision taken by him (Rao), in the capacity as Constitutional head of the state, which was recommended by the BJP ministry and the CBI, that order has been set aside. I think the prestige of the office of the Governor has been restored (by this). Otherwise, this would have set a wrong precedent... I have not done anything wrong and today’s decision has made it clear,” Chavan said.

He added that the Congress had recognised that these allegations were politically motivated and had appointed him as the state president and told him that this controversy had no impact on his electoral fortunes, as was evidenced by the party’s victory in the Nanded and Hingoli Lok Sabha seats. Chavan conceded that allegations like those about Adarsh and the 2G spectrum allotment were being used politically by the BJP and other opposition parties to malign the Congress leadership.
