The Sion police have arrested a 21-year old driver on charges of rash driving and causing death due to negligence after he allegedly rammed a cement mixer truck into a railway over bridge, killing one person.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon near Shanmukhananda Hall in Matunga. The mishap disrupted harbour railway line services for 10 minutes as the truck got stuck below the bridge.
Museed Mohammed Zameer Khan, a driver with Gazbo Carriers, was travelling towards south Mumbai when he rammed his 12-tyre truck (MH-46-F-225) into a railway over bridge near Shanmukhananda hall.
According to the Sion police, Khan was told by people of the area that the truck would not pass through the tunnel below as the height of the railway bridge was low and trains passed over the bridge regularly.
As the truck reached near the bridge, Khan tried to accelerate, hoping to pass through, but hit a pedestrian, rammed into the bridge and got stuck. Fearing mob fury, Khan abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot. The pedestrian was rushed to Sion hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
An officer with Sion police station said, "We have arrested Khan and have booked him for rash driving and causing death due to negligence." She further added, "The deceased is yet to be identified, we found shoe polish in his bag and believe that he was a shoe shiner."
Tempo-car collide, trucker secures bail
In the early hours of Monday, in a separate incident, a truck rammed into a car at Matunga. The accident occurred around 4am near Ruparel College junction on Senapati Bapat Marg. The victims were later rushed to a hospital. The police have arrested the truck driver, Javed Bhashirbhai Maniyar, 31, a resident of Nashik. Javed was produced before the court on Monday morning, where he secured a cash bail of Rs12,000.
Speeding tanker runs over 60-year-old woman
In another accident, a 60-year-old woman was killed in Mahim on Sunday evening. The accident happened when a heavy vehicle knocked her down while she was crossing the road. The woman, identified as Saeeda Ansari was crossing the road at LJ Road in Mahim, when the speeding tanker hit her at 4 pm. Ansari was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The Mahim police arrested the driver Vikramjeet Harijan, 40, after the accident. He has been booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.
