With an aim to conserve trees, which fall prey to concretisation of roads or bad trimming, schools, NGOs and residents plan to adopt around 500 trees situated at Claire Road, Nagpada, Madanpura and the adjoining areas. The initiative has been taken up by local corporator, Rais Shaikh, of the Samajwadi Party.

The tree adoption drive is already underway and around 23 people, including institutions, schools and even the ward officer have adopted trees. "The guidelines of the Indian Road Congress are clearly not followed as the base of the trees are filled with concrete. There needs to be enough space for the roots of the trees to breathe and stay healthy. Most trees fall because of the way they are treated," said Shaikh.

He added, "The people who have adopted trees are making sure that excess concrete is removed and there is more space for trees to breathe. The ward officer, too, has adopted a tree."

To encourage more participation, every tree has a name plate with its details. Shaikh and his team also meet every Sunday to further plan the tree adoption drive.
