Close on the heels of the murder of software engineer Esther Anuhya, home minister RR Patil has asked the police to keep a record of women who take autorickshaws or taxis from outside major railway stations in Mumbai and Pune and Nagpur.
Patil also warned strict action against cops who don’t comply with the order.
Taxis and autos will be asked to display their registration numbers prominently inside the vehicle so that passengers can see them.
The government is also planning to discuss installing CCTVs outside stations.
The home minister said action would be taken against officers who refuse to register complaints from people on the ground that the area in which a certain crime was committed did not fall in their jurisdiction.
