The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not just a temporary initiative that fades away after a few days of public glory but one that is here to stay. Taking the campaign seriously, many Mumbaikars have been conducting cleanliness drives almost every month in public places across the city. Adding to the list of do-gooders are the H/West ward and students of Bandra's R.D. National College.

The ward's solid waste management department (SWM) recently organised a clean-up drive at Linking Road, Bandra's popular shopping street. This initiative by H/West ward was carried out in collaboration with R.D. National College. To motivate the college students, Asif Zakaria, Councillor of ward 95 and Vijay Kamble, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, H/West ward were also present at the location, where they had a word with the students.
Chandrakant Tambe from H/West ward's SWM department shared, "The initiative was organised to make people aware about the need to keep the surroundings clean and especially since this is a shopping area. We spoke to various stakeholders in this area about the need to inculcate a zero-plastic habit."

Around 200 students from R.D. National College, along with their staff members and the ward staff participated in the drive. Among other things, this initiative also included an interaction with hawkers and stall/shop owners from the area to talk about the hazards of using plastic and the need to install dust bins on this road. Activities such as street play and a poster campaign carried out by the students were a huge hit as they made it easier to convey the underlying message.
Anwarbhai, one of the stall owners at Linking Road, shared, "We too wish to keep our surroundings neat and clean but there were no dustbins around. Now that the ward has provided them, it will be our responsibility to maintain this area. We will certainly ensure that cleanliness is maintained and will also tell our customers to do the same by using the newly provided dust bins."

Tambe concluded, "The drive was well received by all, especially the shop owners and the stall owners, as they agreed to bring in a positive change. Since more dust bins are now provided in this area, I hope that the place looks cleaner with time."
