TMC schools, which are trying to keep pace with the growing educational standards, are soon on their way to become energy efficient. The civic body plans to start solar net metering at its schools which will take care of their electricity requirements.

After making its ward offices solar energy efficient, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) now wants to make its schools energy independent. "We are going to implement solar net metering in our schools," said an official from TMC's education department.

If this happens, the TMC will be the first corporation to have this facility in its schools. The civic body is anyways the first government body to install solar net metering in its ward office at Vartak Nagar after the state government passed its net metering policy last year.

Once installed in schools, the solar panels will produce 1,000 units daily and will have the capacity of 267 watts. "Our schools will consume the daily units and extra units will be credited into our account by the electricity provider," he said.

Under this system, the solar panels installed on the rooftop of schools will generate electricity. Normally you need to store this generated power/electricity in a battery for later use. However, under SNT the generated power will be directly released into the power grid of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd and the meter will show the number of units generated.

The person/agency can use the units generated by his rooftop solar panel and if he uses extra units then he will be billed for the latter. The TMC has kept a budget of Rs2.30 lakh for this and 30% of which they will try to seek through government grant.

In March, the civic body had installed 25 kilowatts Solar Net Metering at its Vartak Nagar ward office and Majiwada, Manpada, Uthalsar ward offices are to follow the suit. It will also introduce this new power generation technique at Mumbra and Anandibai Joshi hospital in Vartak Nagar to meet its energy requirements.
