Though illegal constructions in Mumbra and Kalwa were demolished last week, there was no word on how those displaced would be rehabilitated. Hence, after Thane mayor Sanjay More and MP Shrikant Shinde of Kalyan intervened, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has agreed to rehabilitate the aggrieved parties.

Last week, the TMC demolished over 2,000 illegal structures in Mumbra and over 400 in Kalwa to undertake road-widening work. "During the demolition drive in Thane city, the TMC had an immediate rehabilitation plan for those affected. However, nobody spoke about rehabilitating these people who had co-operated with the demolition work in Kalwa, Mumbra and Kausa," said More. "So, on Monday morning, we met TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal, who agreed to our demand of rehabilitating those who had lost their structures in the demolition drive."

As per the TMC, those businessmen over 158 galas/shops were demolished in Kausa will get an alternate space in Kausa Market, Simla Market and Gulab market provided they come forward and ask for it.

In Mumbra, the TMC will build a ground-plus-two storey complex where over 400 shops will be built. "Those who lost their commercial space now and those who will in future because of TMC's development work will be rehabilitated here. However, they will be required to pay the construction cost," said Sandip Malvi, public relations officer, TMC. "And the vegetable vendors near Mumbra station will be given temporary space behind the fire brigade building."

On May 13 and 14, the TMC demolished over 430 structures in Kalwa, including offices of political parties, for road widening work as well as for a new bridge that is to come up at Kalwa naka. "The TMC is going to build a new market building after demolishing the old one at Kalwa naka. And those affected by the road-widening work will be given an alternative space there to carry on their businesses," he said.
