The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has added a feather to its cap after the Seoul metropolitan government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with it to help change Thane into a smart city. The Seoul government will provide technical and financial assistance to the TMC to handle various issues ranging from solid waste management to energy conservation.

Last week, a Seoul government delegation had visited TMC officials and expressed their desire to help the TMC facilitate various projects that would make Thane a smart city. These projects include solid waste management, 24x7 water supply, recycling of water treated in waste treatment plants, harnessing unconventional sources of energy, citizen participation in harnessing energy, etc.

Thus, the TMC commissioner visited Seoul this week and signed an MoU with the government there. "It is for the first time that a municipal corporation from Maharashtra has entered into an agreement with another country for development projects," said Sandip Malvu, public relations officer and deputy commissioner, TMC. "Seoul will provide us with technical knowhow and financial assistance for our projects," he added.

The TMC has already taken the first step in ensuring solid waste management and energy conservation by setting up a bio-fuel plant at Kopri. In this plant, 12 tonnes of biodegradable wastes like broken tree branches, nirmalaya (holy waste), dried flowers, etc are turned it into briquettes (fuel). This will help generate 7 tonnes of briquettes daily.

Of the 7 tonnes of briquettes manufactured daily, 1 tonne will be provided to the TMC to meet its fuel requirements, and the rest will be sold in the open market to meet the costs of operation. Production will start from next year.

The civic body is also the first in the state to start solar net metering in its ward offices and the same will soon be implemented in its municipal schools.
