The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) may not have made it to the top-20 of the Smart City list. However, its energy conservation efforts have earned the civic body four state-level awards respectively.

"TMC has won the eight and the ninth state-level awards for continuous excellence in energy conservation and management," said Sandip Malvi, public relation officer, TMC. MEDA is Maharashtra Energy Development Agency.
TMC has won this prize from among all the municipal corporations within the state of Maharashtra. Malvi said, "Our energy conservation methods have been functioning since the year 2000 and we have been consistent in our efforts."
The civic body received the award at the hands of state energy minister, Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Dr Anil Kakodkar, chairman Rajiv Gandhi science and technology mission of India in Pune on February 18.
The conservation methods of the TMC include LED street lights, use of solar power and power saving efforts in government buildings, auditoriums and hospitals among others. Moreover, solar panels have been installed at various TMC wards. Also, the lights in the corridor of the TMC headquarters at Pachpakahdi run on solar energy.
"This has helped us save at least 30% of the amount on our electricity bills," said a civic engineer from TMC's electricity department.
Thane is also one of the 15 pilot solar cities in India selected by the center, under solar city programme, which includes 60 cities. Under this program, TMC will undertake various measures for efficient energy management and more usage of solar power.
