A mob of around hundred persons gathered at the main junction on busy Achole Road of Nalasopara (East). Reason: Locals caught hold of a man and had tied him to a street light pole. He was being mercilessly beaten up. His crime: He sneaked into a flat to eat something as he was very hungry! However, the Tulinj police came and took custody of the 25-year-old man.

The alleged thief, identified as Mohsin Sultani, a resident of Mira Road, entered a first floor flat in Chandan Apartments on Friday afternoon. The flat belonged to Gunvanti Savla, 49. But as soon as the neighbours learnt that a thief has managed to sneak into the flat, they locked the door from outside. However, Sultani managed to jumped out from the window and land on the ground floor. But as luck would have it, he was caught by locals as he tried to run away from the place. The then marched him to the busy Chandan Naka and tied him to the pole. He was then beaten up with bamboo sticks by many. Some passersby even took the opportunity to give him a fistful just for the heck of it.

"I was outside when I got a call from my neighbour informing me about a thief sneaking into my residence. When I reached home, I found theplas and khakras strewn all over the floor," said Savla, the complainant.

"He also managed to take away a little cash which police has found on him. Due to this, the people tied him up and assaulted him at the junction. Incidents of theft has increased in the area. When we questioned him as to why he broke into my house, he said that he was hungry and was just eating those theplas when the neighbours arrived," added Savla.

"We have arrested him under Section 454 (house breaking) and 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and will produce him at the Vasai court. We are investigating the case further," said Bajirao Kalantre, senior inspector, Tulinj police station.
