The marathon men

They looked like a regular bunch of fitness enthusiasts out for a Sunday run but on closer inspection we vaguely recognised one of them. The gentleman in the blue vest happens to be Addl CP (West) Vishwas Nangre Patil and the “pals” turned out to be fellow policemen. While the police force has long been lambasted for what seems a collective disdain for physical exertion, serious measures are now being implemented to get a leaner and meaner force.

Apparently the idea to run a half marathon every Sunday was first introduced around four months ago and now nearly 200 men — including young sub-inspectors and even senior officers — have made a habit of it. The usual route is from Nariman Point to Worli or alternatively from BKC to JVPD circle via Carter Road and the Sea Link— a good 21 kilometers. Besides Nangre Patil, the other tops cops who we spotted included are his batchmate, Addl CP (South) Krishna Prakash, besides Addl CP (Crime) Niket Kaushik. While we’re glad to see the men entrusted with Mumbai’s security ready to put in some serious sweat, it also must be heartening for rookie cops to see their seniors literally walk their talk on the need for better fitness.
