The endearing part about Diwali in Mumbai is that it is no longer limited to celebrations at home with friends and family; it is also seen as an opportunity to bring together and bond with people from all walks of life, not just to celebrate but also to raise awareness about certain issues. We put the spotlight on a few initiatives that deserve a round of applause.

Santacruz-based Advitya is a creative centre for mentally-challenged people. The centre believes in keeping people busy and utilising their energy in a creative manner. Anjali Shah, Founder, Advitya, says, "This year, we celebrated Diwali in an eco-friendly way, as we are strictly against fire crackers. From games to music to dancing to gifts, we did all. We were also accompanied by generous people, who came to support and celebrate with us."

As a part of their 'Decade Celebration Plan', Joykidz, an activity centre for kids in Bandra, initiated the 'Spreading Smiles Campaign', wherein they chose various organisations and planned workshops, activities and outings with them. This Diwali they have planned celebratory events at different NGOs. Anushka Basantani, Initiator, Spreading Smiles campaign, says, "The concept is backed by more than 100 women. Team 'Spreading Smiles' has a great network of contributors and volunteers, all bonding over a common mission, which is to make others happy."

Bandra-based Shanti Avedna Sadan is India's first hospice, an institution that takes care of the advance-level terminally ill cancer patients. It offers the specialised care of a hospital together with the love of a home. For Diwali, the volunteers and staff will be putting up lights, diyas and bringing the patients out from their wards to burst a few crackers. Sister Aquila, Administrator, says, "We try to create a diversion from the agony and pain that unfortunately, is a part of their lives. Many of them are happy to celebrate Diwali knowing very well that this may be their last festival. We simply want to get people together and spread happiness."

Vile Parle-based Smile Foundation's 'Mission Education' campaign is an initiative to educate 19,000 children. Anjani Kumar Pandey, Regional Manager, Smile Foundation, says, "This Diwali, we would be having a celebration where corporate employees and senior management will be conducting a story-telling session for kids. We will also be setting up Diwali stalls at the centre.
Children from an underprivileged background look forward to events like these and they are surely going to enjoy Diwali this year as well. The children have made greeting cards and diyas for the employees and a special handmade gift for the senior management. I believe that helping the underprivileged and the orphans is nothing but a way to offer service to God."
