Thanekars celebrate Independence Day with a cause

The Vasant Vihar Society at Pokharan Road No1 had organised a blood donation drive and over 60 people were a part of this noble cause. With skits, drama and drawing competition, children had a funfilled day.

Thanekars had an eventful Independence Day celebrations as there were many activities lined-up like blood donation and freedom rides.

The Vasant Vihar Society at Pokharan Road No1 had organised a blood donation drive and over 60 people were a part of this noble cause. With skits, drama and drawing competition, children had a funfilled day.

K Kumar, chairman of Vasant Vihar, said, "Blood donation drive is our annual event and we have been conducting this for many years on every August 15. This year too we received positive response."

The nature lovers from the city planted saplings to observe the day of freedom. The residents from Prestige Garden Society, who have always been pro in designing nature-friendly initiatives, conducted a plantation drive and also installed the nirmalya kalash at their society premises to make sure that all floral wastes are collected in the kalash.

Senior residents of Vijay Garden society at Ghodbunder Road had an interactive session with kids of the area as they narrated stories of India's independence struggle and freedom fighters. A drawing competition among children was also held. Riders from city's Royal Enfield group took rode across the rural areas of Thane. However, their ride was with a cause as they distributed books, notebooks and others stationery material among the tribal kids at Jowar and Mokhada.

Few other societies also had Sanskrit shloka recitation competition to revive the vanishing language. Manohar Kataria, secretary of Tarangan society, said, "We train kids at Tarangan in Sanskrit by arranging a special class every Friday. So, on Saturday, the kids participated willingly and enjoyed the classes as well as the competition."

A group of active citizens were also involved in spreading awareness about handling the national flag and how to not insult the Tricolour among residents.
