The family of a 40-year-old Thane woman who died following a road mishap donated her heart and liver on Wednesday. The donated organs saved two lives from different cities – a 55-year-old Surat-based school teacher and a 56-year-old Srinagar resident.

The heart was transported from Thane's Jupiter Hospital to Mulund — over 8.7 kilometre — within 10 minutes. The liver was donated to a patient within Jupiter Hospital itself.

The man from Surat who received the heart was admitted to Mumbai's Fortis Hospital. He was on the waiting list since June this year for a heart transplant after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy.

The 40-year-old donor, a resident of Thane, had met with a road accident while returning from her village on June 26 and was rushed to hospital. She was pronounced brain-dead on Tuesday afternoon. The medical social workers at the hospital counselled the grieving family about organ donation, after which her son and daughter consented to donate their mother's heart and liver.
