The Thane police department has suspended two police inspectors after they were found guilty of negligence on duty in an internal probe into the farmers' protest in Nevalli in June, during which police had resorted to use of pellet guns and lathi-charge to disperse the protesters. The farmers from three villages had gathered to protest against the construction of a boundary wall on an abandoned air base land acquired by the government over 70 years ago.

On June 22, the villagers from Bhal, Nevalli, Khoni, Nevalli pada and Warli came together at around 10 am and set tyres ablaze to block the main road of Kalyan near Bhal village. When the police vans approached to pacify the crowd, the mob started pelting stones at police vehicles which injured three senior officers. The Indian Navy had built a boundary wall on their 1,600 acre land which has been allegedly encroached.

Hill Line police station Senior Police Inspector Mohan Waghmare and Assistant Police Inspector Ravindra Kurati have been suspended after the probe while Police Inspector Vijay Pawar has been transferred to Special branch at the Thane City police headquarters as a punishment posting.

A senior police officer said, "The suspension has been ordered after the officers were found negligent while conducting their duty and for not handling the situation efficiently which escalated further leading to damage to public property and pellet injuries to the villagers."

"Moreover, the villagers had planned the huge protest few days before, which too went unnoticed by the senior police officer. The protest could have been handled efficiently if the local police would have learned about the protest preparation by the villagers," said the officer.

Sunil Bharadwaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 4, said, "Both officers have been suspended and the order has been released from the Thane police Commissionerate."
