The first list for first year junior college (FYJC) admissions in arts, science and commerce came out on Monday in all Mumbai colleges.

To save students from wading in rainwater to check their status, colleges used technology like never before. Websites, SMSes and emails were unleashed to make life easier. Students who made it to the first merit list at HR College got an SMS from the college congratulating them and informing them of the schedule thereafter.

“Our admission is being handled by students. They have come up with ideas that appeal to people their age,” says Indu Shahani, principal, HR College. “I have received this SMS. It’s a good idea especially since the weather is bad,” says Yash Bhushan, a student from Borivali. The second option was riding the humble mouse. Many colleges put up their first list on their websites. “Our college software compiled data of 14,800 received forms. The cut-offs are displayed on the college website for everyone to see,” says Dr Rajpal S Hande, principal, KJ Somaiya College.

“Students these days are all quite net savvy. Our cut-offs are on the website,” says Subhadra Anand, principal, RD National College. Rajshree Panna, a physically challenged student, said, “I had applied in many colleges and it would have been daunting to visit all these institutions.”
