Taxi mows down senior citizen on Eastern Freeway

A senior citizen from Chennai who was visiting his son in Mumbai on a vacation was knocked down by a taxi at the Eastern Freeway tunnel on Wednesday morning.

The victim has been identified as Algalswami Shetiyar (70).

The Trombay police have registered a case of death due to negligence against the taxi driver, Mohammad Hafiz Khan, 50.

According to the police, Shetiyar had come from Chennai for a month and was staying with his son at Ashok Nagar near Panjarpole junction. On Wednesday at 8 am Shetiyar left the house for a morning walk. While he was walking on the freeway, a taxi coming from Chembur to CSMT knocked him down. The taxi driver suddenly noticed a man in front of his car but could not apply the brakes due to the high speed of the vehicle.

The police were informed by passersby who also rushed Shetiyar to the hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.
