The Western Railways (WR) authorities have found that taxi drivers are one of the reasons behind the low ranking of the Mumbai Central railway station in the Quality Council of India's report that was released nearly a week ago. Mumbai Central stook on the 40th rank in the survey conducted by the Centre. Sources said the low rank was primarily under the consumer satisfaction column.

Taxi drivers overcharging the passengers, haphazard parking on the east side of the station that caters to both, short and long distance trains, are some of the reviews by the consumers that have somewhat marred the Mumbai Central railway station's image. The station ranked 27th in the survey last year.

DNA visited the Mumbai Central railway station and asked the taxi drivers to take us to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Lower Parel. The drivers quoted between Rs 120-140 to CSMT and between Rs 90-100 for Lower Parel; the price would be Rs 30-40 less if the taxis run on meter on the same route.

"They also park their cabs beyond the designated parking area," said a WR official on the condition of anonymity. WR's Mumbai division's headquarters are situated in Mumbai Central.

Apart from this, the WR authorities also found that the Kota stones have been damaged at several locations on the station premises. They also found that there is water leaking from pipelines used to clean coaches standing close to the station that makes tracks unclean. They are also segregating the parking of vehicles and taxis.

Now, the WR is preparing an internal report about the various problems with Mumbai Central station.

The Central government had released detailed ranking on cleanliness and consumer satisfaction of the country's A1 and A grade railway stations.
