Central Railway and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials have got down to studying the Supreme Court order that quashes a state government decision to reserve a plot of land acquired from Godrej. The land, acquired first to lay additional railway lines (5th and 6th) between Thane and Kurla, was later sought to be reserved for the construction of a new road running along Vikhroli station.

Godrej had taken its fight all the way to the SC to get back its land, claiming that the state as well as the railways had spent more than the stipulated 10 years in formally taking over the land.

The latest SC order, which dna reported about on Monday, means that both the railways and BMC will have to work out a new solution for the creation of a much-needed road overbridge (ROB) at Vikhroli station if the land mentioned in the court order is the one on which the two agencies plan to construct a 60-foot road.

The proposed road, along the eastern fringe of the station, is the only way the railways can build the ROB in place of the level crossing that was closed at the south-end of the station in 2011. The level crossing had become the centre of a fierce agitation by activists and residents, who were troubled by the large number of people being run over by trains.

The road, to be built by the BMC, would be essential for people living in buildings along Tagore Nagar — a settlement running along the eastern side of the station — to get to Pirojshah Godrej Road and then onward to the Eastern Express Highway.

The closure of the level crossing has meant that people in the fast developing colonies on either side of Vikhroli station have to take a detour to Kanjurmarg in the north or Ghatkopar in the south to get from east to west. The detour is more than seven to eight kilometres, and what makes matters worse is that the two ROBs at Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg are among the most congested in the city.

"We will have to study the order and find out which land is being referred to. If it is the land along the eastern stretch of the station, then the construction of the ROB might take a hit," said a CR official.
